To maintain content on swis.epfl.ch, you can log in using your sciper number (using the login button to the upper-right).

Editing pages using Jahia

As soon as you activate editing mode, you can alter containers by clicking on the edit icon in the upper right of each container. In the upcoming pop-up window, you can choose among three different editor modes: simple text, HTML Editor (Standard), HTML Editor (ActiveX). In the simple text editor, you can enter pure HTML code. The HTML editor allows you to choose tags from a toolbar. It has to be used with care because it does not only facilates the coding but also adds arbitrary tags, for instance an (invisible)
tag when you press enter - pretty annoying when building tables. Finally, you can work with the ActiveX editor (Internet Explorer/Windows only) that provides some nice features. For instance it is possible to copy links from other websites which are pasted as hyperlink and not as text only. As this editor comes very close to Microsoft Frontpage, it is not possible to include images here. For that, you have to switch to the simple text/html editor.

For arranging your content into different paragraphs, Jahia wants you to use separate containers, each with its own title. If you, however, want to introduce your own heading, please avoid to use heading tags (h1, h2, h3...) but rather

< p class="title">Your Heading </p>

Including Images

The easiest way to include images is to choose an image in the container edit pop-up. There, an image can be uploaded and will be placed to the left of the content (it is not possible to alter the layout). If you really have to, you can store images on the server http://lanoswww.epfl.ch/swis/images and include them into your HTML code using the <img> tag. If you have no write access to the server mentioned above, please send the images you want to use to the webmaster.

Creating pages using different tools

It is also possible to create arbitrary pages in Frontpage/youreditorofchoice and store them on lanoswww.epfl.ch/swis from where they can be included into the Jahia framework using the iframe tag. As iframes are included as images, it is thus necessary to format the page according to the EPFL guidelines. This can be easily done by using the EPFL stylesheet that can be found at:

http://www.epfl.ch/styles/dynastyle.php

and can be loaded into your HTML document by including the following line into the head of your document:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://www.epfl.ch/styles/dynastyle.php">

In Frontpage, this is done by choosing format->style sheet links. In the following dialog the url from above has to be entered.

This approach has one drawback: the page is included like an image and will have scroll bars to its right and bottom if it is bigger than the actual
main frame.

Checking for broken links

If you maintain pages within swis.epfl.ch, please make sure that you check your links occasionally. You can do this in a very nice graphical fashion using
this online tool. Less fancy, but allowing for recursive checking, is the W3C Link Checker.
